Microsoft expands the collaborations and the expansion of its brands in various directions with incredible speed! Thus the newest collaboration or being more exact acquisition is that of Mojang Studios developing the absolute blockbuster Minecraft. This was announced previously, too and now Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella came up with a comparably more definite answer to a question that was addressed to him during the annual Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce annual luncheon at the Westin Seattle. So the new information was the following:
“To me what Minecraft represents is more than a hit game franchise. It’s this open-world platform. If you think about it, it’s the one game parents want their kids to play. If you talk about STEM education, the best way to introduce anyone to STEM or get their curiosity going on, it’s Minecraft,” he said. “So I think what this open-world phenomenon will mean to the community at large, for people who builders, is pretty big, and we are very excited about the acquisition, obviously. We are really excited about being stewards to the community that is Minecraft.”
Further, Nadella also joked about this news noting that in the morning he woke up and his 10-year-old girl asked him whether he knew that Microsoft buys Mojang. The audience was really amused.
So deal is already confirmed and we know that from the official press release informing about Microsoft buying Mojang for $2.5 billion. The final acquisition is planned to be finished in late 2014.
In addition, speaking about the future development of Minecraft, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox also added,
“‘Minecraft’ is one of the most popular franchises of all time. “We are going to maintain ‘Minecraft’ and its community in all the ways people love today, with a commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future.”
We will learn some more details upon the acquisition closing.
